Samsung Galaxy Fold Durability Test! - Is it STILL fragile?!

The Galaxy Fold is here for its official durability test! See what your phone looks like with the new Robot Skin HERE: dbrand.com/robot The Galaxy Fold was announced about a year ago, but then over the course of that year, the Samsung Galaxy Fold was delayed for quite a while because of structural issues. The screen wasn't strong enough, and dust was getting inside the device. So Samsung canceled their customers preorders, added a few new slight design changes, and here we are, almost a year after the first announcement, with Version 2 of the Galaxy Fold.
Galaxy Fold Teardown is here: • Samsung Galaxy Fo...
Is this new version of the Galaxy Fold stronger than the original? Is it strong enough for every day life? Today we will find out with a Samsung Galaxy Fold durability test. We are going to see what the Fold is made out of, and see how soft the inner screen is. And maybe find out why so many of them were breaking in the first place.

That's what happens when engineers make these in lab environments. The lab doesn't have dust everywhere. They really should have made the engineers work inside a machine shop so that there would be plenty of debris to have to ward against. Maybe we wouldn't have gotten the phone till next year, but it'd be a kick ass phone then. So sad to see how easily damaged the screen is with just a fingernail.

So I'm coming back to this video now, after first happening upon it when it first released. This video was my very first exposure to the IDEA of a foldable smartphone, and while it definitely failed in just about every practical way, the idea intrigued me from the get-go. Fast-forward to now, a few years later, and I've been using a Z Flip 3 since Decembwr 2021, and I have a Z Fold 4 on preorder. The Galaxy Fold walked, so that the future Z Series could run. It's amazing to see how far the series has come since this video; now, as long as you know what you're getting, foldable phones are expected to last you the normal length of any other smartphone. Credit where credit's due, Samsung has definitely created something to get people excited for smartphones again.

I have been using the fold for several months now and I love it. Albeit with due every day caution, it really is remarkable to have and use. My only sadness was dropping something metal from a slight height onto the opened glass which has damaged a part of the screen. Other than that, it comes with me info the bathroom while I shower and isnt affected by the overly humid room and has performed well with everything I want from it. Some apps could be better with the compatibility but the lack of users if the phone make it understandable!

I definitely think foldable phones are the future and absolute love the idea. However I think it's going to be quite long until we see good every day devices that have durable displays. Also I really wouldn't mind having very small gap between screens for multitasking jobs. I think that Surface implementation is ok. But I still like that Samsung has done a bold move to put something like this into production. About five years and I assume these will be durable enough

This guy is a monster!! On another note, I bet you could just use 2 separate thin screen protectors that would allow you to use the screen and allow the screen to close. A solid option to look at. The most disappointing part is by far the dust protection. If not for that, I would gladly try it out.

Mj Raaz That’s the problem with Samsung they release their devices without giving them their proper test runs and also without perfecting their devices like Apple does. Why do you think Apple is a little bit behind Samsung? Because when Apple releases what Samsung released last year, apples versions will be x10 better due to the fact that they take their time and make sure their giving quality work. Literally apples face recognition worked so much better than Samsung’s, like you couldn’t even compare of how much better it was. Samsung still can’t even get their fingerprint scanner right... lmao

i'm certainly intrigued by the idea of the galaxy fold. i don't think it's necessary, however. i would consider it only if they ironed out durability issues over the course of the next few generations. looks like they've already taken a step in the right direction with the z flex or whatever.

I absolutely love that they - they, probably China let's be honest - have invented a technology that can FOLD when displaying video / video content. I do often say to myself 'just because it exists, doesn't make it any less amazing'. I said this about this tech. Mindblowing really, and the possibilities are literally endless. As soon as a folding phone is scratch proof, dust proof and water resistant, pretty and not 10 million pounds, I will get one. For sure.

I've had the galaxy fold for a couple months now and I have trouble finding any problems with it. I purposefully creased the plastic with my finger nails at their typical length of 1 to 2 mm and I had to actually go out of my way to damage it. It feels just as strong of build quality as any flagship Samsung phone, aka built like a tank. I cant wait to buy the fold 2!

The folds inner display should have another gorilla glass layer on top with a gap in the middle. On the centre (1cm which flexes) there should be no glass but the plastic putty like substance that is present on the screen should be filled to match the height level of the glass (to maintain the same height of the display) The inside edges of the glass should be filled with something like OCA (optically clear adhesive to maintain a clean look) The glass should be curved so that the sharp edge of the glass does not cut into the display. The folding mechanism should have been a miniature version of the hinges that laptops have used for decades. With stoppers to prevent excessive fold ( You could make a 360 degree folding phone!) The front display should have been a full screen one with a cutout for the cameras like the S10 uses. Just my opinion on how this phone could have been amazing! Right now it's a disaster

I was cringing so bad at first with only the word "NO!!!!!" running through my mind... but when he actually proves all of the faults to the phone with such honest and straightforward perfection, I am now amazed by him and Extremely glad he did this.. XD Also this phone is freaking badass, I would say it is pretty standard for smartphone flaws, which is easily passable. Dust and screen protection for the next one and you have a solid unit. Add a few tweaks on the touch sensitivity issues and the issues with easily damaged pixels, then make it waterproof and add a stylus version in the note line..

So there is only two problems with the phone is that dust will mess up the hinges and the inside screen is weak enough to be scratched by a fingernail. But it is still minorly durable. If the screen wasnt weak I'd say it is durable.

I like the phone that you said when opening seemed more like a tablet. That to me is how the phone should seem to be when being unfolded. It can be a phone when closed. And, when you, would like a larger screen, a tablet, you unfold it. That way you have a larger screen to see things better for those who may have bad eye sight for those of us who's eye sight is getting less capable to seeing small objects. Heck I would not mind for it be be a larger tablet. Maybe for me, best to be the amazon fire table size when folded, That is because it fits find in my back pocket or coat pocket when doing the church. The tablet not only allows large viewing size for gps, apps, photos, videos, movies, games. And, of course, mamas little babysitting helper for many parents who would hand it to their kids so to keep them occupied.

Jerry, I have a real question that just popped in my head. What if the whole display is made out of gorilla glass except the middle folding segment? Is it even possible? In that way the majority of the display is semi scratch resistant but sensitive in the middle section. I know it's a dumb question but seems like an idea.

I think Samsung’s worry (and everyone else making folding phones by now) is that it’ll make the screen look less continuous and make the crease even more conspicuous. Or perhaps it helps the folding action more if the entire screen has the same flexibility instead of just the fold but I’m not sure.

Actually, damage to the folding screen and scathing is not that surprising, I would expect that to be the case with the Galaxy Fold design and all the warnings Samsung provides. If you think that is unreasonable... think about your PC monitor - poking it with razor blade would result in similar damage (I know some screen have glass on top, but they are not that common). Take for example my RG90 - when I was hanging it on VESA mount I was extremely scared to damage it and used pillow + my girlfriend to support it. Ok... so perhaps you not keeping 49 inch screens in your pocket and this comparison is not exactly relevant, but my point is - I would treat internal Galaxy Fold screen like unprotected monitor panel. It is slightly inconvenient, but it closes inside... I think I would be able to live with it. However, what I would not be able to live with is sand and dust getting into the hinge. From the video it was clear you don't need to try hard to get something in that hinge... it got full of sand whilst wiping it off the screen... dropping it on the sand would be end of story, or even putting it in the pocket with little bit of dust. In short - I am happy to work around the screen weakness and as long as the phone is closed that screen is well protected, but the hinge is exposed at all times... furthermore.. it doesn't even need to be! I understand screen protector for such device is currently "unobtainium", but surely hinge seals could have been better designed. Final point - it doesn't even seem like it was possible to easily shake sand out or blow it out with pressurised air. So not only hinges are poorly protected, the gap between hinge and screen creates effectively sand and dust trap. I might drop £1000 on such device... comparable with other high-end iPhones and Samsungs.. and then hope it would survive at least 2 years. First years is kind of fine with £149 replacement cost (I assume in UK it would directly translate into £149). I could justify either the high price for such unique phone or lack of durability, but not both at the same time. Remember Note edge? it was along same lines, very expensive for the time, but it had no glaring weakness. Galaxy Fold is not only fragile, but as well it is double the price of any other phone for sale... it really becomes hard to justify.
