iPhone Xs Max Teardown - Is there any Thermal Cooling?
Huge thanks to Audible for sponsoring this video! To start your free 30 day trial, and get your free audio book click here: www.audible.com/jerryrig/ or text the word jerryrig to 500-500. This brand new iPhone Xs Max, is ready to be torn down and opened up. Lets review it together from the inside. Apple has always tried to keep people out of their iPhones, but that has never stopped us before. Its time to see how repairable this new iPhone Xs Max is. What parts can be replaced, and what components of the iPhone Xs should be avoided? In this iPhone Xs teardown video I show how I remove the screen, the battery, the charging port, as well as the Sandwiched motherboard. We get to find out if Apple has included any thermal cooling inside of the phone for their processor.

The patience Mr. Rig exhibits is phenomenal...I just couldn't do that unmerciful teardown & reassemble, all while shooting footage (even if he has an assistant/team) and then editing it into a finished piece of content. Unreal. I have used nothing but Android phones (first in 2009 was "MyTouch 3G" i.e. HTC Magic, then MyTouch 4G, Galaxy S3, Galaxy S6 and just got a Note 9) but I love the Apple iPad because of their superior music production apps. The phones however just do nothing for me...the proprietary backwards hardware is the perfect complement to the proprietary backwards software. Unless you use iOS for a single creative purpose (music, writing, photo editing & drawing via the Pencil) the ecosystem is not conducive to anything but repeated cornholing. Just sayin'....

Thanks for this. I've noticed 2, 3 black "black specs" on ever darn photo I take now. No spots, damage on the outer case/back lens glass - so I am guessing some kind of dirt dust actually got inside and on the inside camera lens. - I've seen a few posts of this issue with X, XS cameras both front and back. - I WISH the spec was on the front, I never use that selfie front camera...lol Oh well. *Although it's supposed to be sealed dust proof..I've seen way too many videos of this issue with the phones, X, XS. Eh. I've taken apart my old 6+ to replace the battery with no issues, this is obviously different from the old phone (actually disconnecting that display appears easier than the old 6+) - but totally doable to access that rear camera.

Hi Jerry just came across your well produced video. You ask the question of is there thermal cooling? You missed that stainless steel piece. This piece used to be a solid stainless. Since the X this piece has been replaced by a copper center, three layer bonded alloy. Similar to the US quarter which has been like this since the 70s. Yes the thick copper center layer works and was first used in a Fujitsu smart phone almost ten years ago. So there you go there is an intentional thermal cooling design in the X and the phone can be made as thin as possible, not like some other cooling methods that has to be rigged in.

*The reason Apple charges $599 to replace the back glass is because the back glass is impossible to replace. Apple themselves swap out the whole frame and housing instead of just the back glass. And you're right, that seems incredibly inefficient and an incredible amount of work, but that's how they built it. It doesn't bug Apple at all though. It's just their way of coercing you into buying a new phone instead of fixing the old one. Say goodbye to your wallet for me* ~ jerryrigeverything.

For everyone that might be repairing their phones. ALWAYS first unplug the battery before you unplug the LCD connectors, because from iPhone 7 and on the iphones always have electricity running thru them, so if you want to avoid a chance for your motherboard to stop working please do unplug the battery first.

Humor or just negative comments about Apple? If he doesn't like Apple then don't make Apple tear down videos. I assume he is trying to pander to Android fans especially Samsung. Apple makes it difficult for reasons such as no user replacements to keep the phone intact and with Apple Care, who cares? Besides, the manufacture process is such a way that most folks don't even need any repair unless they are careless with their device. Knock on wood I've never had to have a repair on any Apple phone since the beginning. Just saying.

Sam to some extent it is true. Apple supported iPhone 6 for 5 years, while Samsung will abandon you 2-3 years after you buy their devices. However Android is not only Samsung which in my opinion is worse than Apple in sucking your money. Others like OnePlus will give you more out of your phone for maybe 4 years for a third of the price.

From most phone teardowns, a lot of phones use an eccentric rotating mass vibrator, usually in an encapsulated or coin vibrator form or a linear actuator, a la Apple's rather noice Taptic Engine. Eccentric rotating mass vibrators take up less space than Taptic Engine like linear actuator vibration motors but those generally offer better haptic feedback.

Just an FYI, at 7:04 when you talk about the PCB being without heat dissipation, that isn't technically right. It is covered on top and on the bottom with thin graphite sheets (the black tapes covering the bottom of the board and the EMI cans.) Also, there is more graphite covering the wireless charger, under the cameras and on top of some of the brackets that were protecting all of the 'lego' connections on the PCB. Great video!

I'm assuming the Xs has the same quark as the X in that the face camera is connected to the original screen. so if you try and get a screen replacement from 3rd party then you will no longer have face recognition. The only way to get around this is either only replace the glass, or pay Apple to replace your screen because they are the ONLY ones who can re-program the face recogintion camera (or similar for touch ID) to work with their screen. Nice vid!

Apple don’t generally even perform the swap, they will just give you replacement pricing on a new one and you just gotta hope you have an iCloud backup

I watched this phone teardown and compared to chinese counterparts in your other vids, it feels like a new versus an old toyota corolla built 30 years ago, so complex! I do not wanna repair it ever, but I appreciate the thought that went into this device, too bad I prefer the freedom of android and endless customization I will die without.

Hi, do you have a video to replace the entire back cover housing (including swapping the wireless charging coils and all the other cables/buttons that are on the housing)?
