What is a Bump Stock? Should it be illegal?!
How does a bump stock work? This video will demonstrate how a bumpstock works when attached to a Semi-Automatic AR-15. This has been in the news quite a bit lately as the United States government holds hearings on whether this gun accessory should be banned.
This video shows how a Bump Stock works, and what it can accomplish while attached to an AR-15.
It is currently illegal for private United states citizens to own a fully automatic firearm. (As of 1986) BUT bump stocks are only an accessory to a rifle, and don't actually alter the gun to fire automatically. So they are totally legal as of the posting of this video, anyone can buy one, and anyone can shoot with one.
The question is: Should it stay legal? or should this accessory be regulated?

@Chris Bourque No "hate." The "vein" comment was a joke. Anyway, it's actually a magazine. Clips do exist, but a vast majority of modern guns don't use clips. They're not really used today. I'm no gun expert, so some may use it. Generally speaking, though, they don't.

I deeply appreciate this short, informative, educational video. Too often, our culture & politics skips forwards from a premise to pre-defined conclusion. Personally, I have a range of nuanced opinions about how our laws should look with respect to weapons. From the moment that guns were placed into my hands as a child (by my parents) I had it carefully impressed upon me that, if safety is your first priority, it is easy to keep yourself and others safe. Understanding the practical tradeoffs of devices (like a bumpstock) gives us the knowledge to increase our safety as gun owners, gun users, neighbors, and citizens. When our paranoia gets the better of us, that's when we let safety slip as a priority, and that's when these weapons become dangerous.

Your nuance is wrong for one simple reason: It does not account for the increased rates of domestic terrorism in the US.

Thank you for this video. A recent ATF arrest for FRTs mentioned now-illegal bump stocks, ans I finally did the "look it up, dummy" thing. Your video answered a lot of questions I had. I grew up around guns back in the 50s & 60s, kept up a little during the 70s, & haven't d9ne anything with them since. We let our nephews jabe the guns because, back to back, the places the military sent my husband & me didn't allow guns, & then we kinds lost interest because we lived in a highly urbanized area & it was not easy finding a range. So, this is my first time seeingnan AR15 being shot, first time seeing what 9ne of them looks like (I realize they're highly customisable, but as a frustrated artist type, I can kind of pick out the "bones" of it. I have neber shot nor seen someone shoot a semi automatic rifle. Pistols, yeah, rifles, no. Thennt9 see just exactly what a bump stock looks like, how it works, in regular time & on slo-mo, allowed me to see what everyone is arguing about-nit nsaying I agree or disagree with their arguments, just that I can see both sides. Which has always been part of my "problem," or so I've been told, I see all the points of view & either can't pick a side or it takes me forever! lol Thanks, again, for this. I realize its like 4 yr old probably, but I'm glad it was still here.

26 U.S.C. § 5845(b) For the purposes of the National Firearms Act the term Machinegun means: Any weapon which shoots, is designed to shoot, or can be readily restored to shoot, automatically more than one shot without manual reloading, by a single function of the trigger. The bump stock fires one bullet per function of the trigger without reloading. A semi automatic AR-15 fires one bullet per function of the trigger without reloading. A Glock fires one bullet per function of the trigger without reloading. A double action revolver fires one bullet per function of the trigger without reloading. The most common youth gun in America the Ruger 10-22 shoots one bullet per function of the trigger without reloading. The bump stock is not a machine gun. How the gun sounds doesn't determine the action of the firearm. I can bump fire my AR-15 without a bump stock. The bump stock only makes the technique easier. A bump stock can fire at 300 rounds per minute. Jerry Miculek can fire a semi automatic AR-15 with no bump stock at 460 rounds per minute. If rate of fire determines whether or not a gun is fully automatic wouldn't Jerry Miculek's hands be considered machine guns; Are you gonna ban his hands? A fully automatic AR-15 fires at 700 to 970 rounds per minute. Big difference isn't it.

Personally enjoy owning and making a hobby of my firearms by going to the range or just personal security. Having not known about these "Bump Stocks" I was pretty shocked. Someone had a big brain thinking of that, and I slightly understand the concern people might have. While cool and rather hilarious, I already know that the stigma of today's politics will be quick to turn it into a controversy. Either way, awesome stuff Jerry, hope you have fun with that setup, its pretty nice.

Thank you for the demo as i did not know what a bump stock is. For anyone who want to outlaw a 'bump stock' they must first demonstrate what it can or cannot do. i think the bump stock makes this an automatic rifle in terms of ammo used. It terms of accuracy, probably not. I think the outlaw guns group would not like this but that is not for them to say. I think they should be legal and yes do the background checks like you would for any gun that is currently in place. Again thanks for the demo - it was very informative to me - John

WOW! I too was blown away by how fast it unloaded the magazine...almost like a machine gun. Thank you so much for the demonstration, it was very enlightening! I'm totally pro-gun, but I'd have to do some thinking about whether I think these devices should be legal. Of course, they're currently illegal. Would be great for defending home & family against the attack of a gang, but wow. It was funny when you said shooting guns were sometimes done on dates. I lived in SLC from 1990-2007 (I recognized that you were in Utah before you said you were, lol...I miss Utah!), & my first date with a former boyfriend was going out to Strawberry Reservoir, back in the woods, & target shooting. One of my best dates ever. :)

The reach you have now vs the start is huge. Collaboration with industry and topic experts (not the people who claim to be) on certain topics where these hobbies/professions are coming into the age of 3d printing/cnc machining, open source information, and internet ordering. I love your work and how both entertaining and educational your videos are. One minor criticism I have of this video is that you called the magazine a clip. Given how dedicated your channel is to spreading knowledge, I hope that you can make sure to be more accurate about that detail in the future. A clip is a piece of metal that holds bullets together so you can rapidly load them into a magazine. A magazine is a compartment that holds bullets to be directly fed into the firing chamber of a gun. Magazines can be integral or detachable, and clips are typically only used on guns with integrated magazines. For guns with detachable magazines like AR-15 variants, you would only use a clip if you needed to carry a lot of ammo and didn't want the extra weight of all of those additional magazines. So, a small amount of your ammo would be contained in several magazines. The rest would be contained in a largeer number of (lighter) clips. Then you would rapidly refill those magazines from clips in the field once those magazines were empty. Even if you had clips usable with the AR-15 platform, you wouldn't be able to feed or load an AR-15 with a clip. You'd use the clip to load the magazine. Then you'd put the empty clip away, and load the newly filled magazine into the gun. It'd be great if you could do a video showing what a clip is as opposed to a magazine so people can stop making that mistake in pop culture and ordinary parlance.

I prefer semi-auto fire myself. Even in my army-days, we never used the 3-rd burst setting on our M-4 carbines. We always shot for accuracy/marksmanship, anf 3-rd burst seemed like a waste anyway. Sure, full-auto (or burst, or maybe simulated via bump-stock) might be fun......but for me at least, i personally have a fast trigger-pull, if i need to send rds downrange fast.

That isn't automatic fire, that's still just semi automatic function. The upgrade just offers a superior body mechanic to be used. Rather than engaging the finger's muscles in a sideways "come here" motion, and the arm on the other side of the body being used to pull the weapon into your shoulder. Instead of pulling away from the trunk, and the trigger arm keeps the stock into the shoulder, on the same side of the body, via the attached grip.

Drug addicts also get that feeling or anything that increases the Dopamine level on ur body, that does not mean it should be legal. I'm not again owning it, I just hate people that think they deserve to have something just because it makes them happy. If u want to own a metal weapon capable of mass murder u should have a psychological meeting every 6 months to make sure u keep a healthy mind with a registered doctor (all law enforcement employees do), have extensive safety training n go through an extensive background check before the porches of any firearms or their parts. Then u are free to have as much fun as u please since you live in a society, and those processes will keep safe the rest of the people for all that fails those procedures. The problem is that so call 2nd amendment fighters refuse any control of firearms making it extremely easy for any unstable people to get access to them.

@Gtx 1070 Exactly! Make them legal and fully regulated like many states have done with Weed for recreational use. It makes it easier for the buyer getting it with great safety quality n in a healthy environment n, not with sketchy dealers. it still needs more help on the issue like making it easier for despanceries been alow to use banks but since it is still illegal on the federal level they have to work with cash. That said why not do the same with weapons n make them regulate n stop the unregulated sales of them. Hundreds of Thousands of weapons go to the cartels n gangs n pass the border because anyone over 18 can buy those guns n sell them to the black market since they are not regulated. The weapons are already legan we just need regulation but we have a lot of idiots n criminals that don't want regulations because they know they can't own them. Everyone is free to buy weapons but if every weapon or part of it is registered to the buyer they can be tracked if is used on a crime. I don't mind that if I kill some entering my home with it it was self-defense. Only people that are criminals or want to commit a crime, mentally ill people or those that know they have a record want to stop regulation. they should be stopped since they are the ones that make it harder for law-abiding citizens like me.

@Gtx 1070 Regarding buying weapons on the Black market It makes it extremely harder for mentally ill people that are the one that commits a lot of those incidents, n it makes it easier for law enforcement to track those weapons if they are registered. It is because u can buy a weapon without registering them first that there are so many on the streets. U are making all my points n reason for regulations.

Note that you can still bump fire a gun without a modified stock, also, with 3d printing becoming wildly available not only can bump stocks be illegally made cheaply and easily but also the entire gun.

May want to emphasize that it's not automatic, but it facilitates easy motion of firing and resetting the trigger by hand.

I had one for a while. Tried it and thought it was cool. Just like the M16, the rapid fire recoiled up and to the right. Accuracy is nonexistent in both. I found I would rather have accuracy and less cost. It was kinda fun but ya really can't hit much when ya need to. I took it off and replaced the stock. I'd rather take an accurate shot. I also feel they should stay legal for those that want them.

Jerry, you make such informative and interesting videos. The clarity in how you describe things is a talent not many have, but you have it. About the bump stock, I don't like it. I can see how you use it recreationally and I'm not offended by you having one, but the danger of mass carnage is too great, and no longer hypothetical, to allow these things to be owned generally. Even the AR15 alone is too great a threat to general safety. I was surprised how fast you were able to shoot that without the bump stock. That's my opinion. Also enjoyed your Rivian 1500 mile video and hope you slip in a 5,000 mile video before the promised 10,000 mile.

Interesting presentation. Love the slow mo with both setups used. It helps to visualize how it occurs. BTW...it's a magazine and not a clip. Just saying.

Amazing video. Came to KZonlines for an example as I just saw a video about a potential mass shooter that was found with a bump stock. Fired much quicker than I expected. If autos are illegal the bump stock should be also. But I guess people would just 3d print them.

Still not as lethal as a pump or semi automatic shotgun with buckshot but yes it does turn a semiautomatic rifle into a whole other animal. Some people will argue that it's still one pull if the trigger but it isn't, it's multiple pulls if the trigger with that aid of the stock. I do not think they should have been banned because it's not the piece of plastic and metal that kills people, it's other people that that do the killing. If we are going to ban things because of their lethality then we have to ban vehicles, most tools, ropes, gasoline and diesel fuel and so on. The AR-15 platform was never designed to kill human beings, it's a sporting rifle yet the m4 carbine that the military uses was designed to take life.
