iPhone 7 Scratch test - BEND TEST - Durability video!
Can the iPhone 7 survive the JerryRigEverything Durability tests? Like always we'll start with the scratch test from Mohs scale of hardness. With this test we can find out if Apples' new iPhone 7 has a regular glass screen, or a super scratch resistant sapphire screen. After analyzing all of the different aspects of the iphone 7, like the camera lens, the home button, the rear aluminum, and the charging port, you will have a better understanding of what the phone is made of, and how much abuse the iPhone 7 can withstand in every day life.
Do you think it was a good idea to remove the headphone jack?

Got this recommendation today. Still using an iphone 7plus crazy that is been 5 years. It has a few nicks and bumps. I have dropped the phone way to many times. But it stood the test of time. Definitely some wear on the charging port and battery but still decent. Phone got iOS 15 recently so i might keep it one more year before upgrading to a new iPhone. I like what other manufacturers are doing but hey I can confidently say this lasted me 5 years chances are my next iPhone will last me at least 3 years and get updates. Maybe if im lucky 5-6 years again.

Ive had my Iphone 7Plus for 6 years now which means that i plugged/unplugged charger into my Iphone circa 9000times and its still going strong. To be honest, that was my main worry. Sure, it doesnt look prestine like the first day that i got it, it lost some of the colour, (iphone is black and battery port is silver) but its still working. All in all, my phone is still working, It has few scratches, but i dont really care. Im soon gonna get an upgrade :)

Had my iphone 5s charging port give out on me after about 3 years of use. I even made sure (from previous experiences) that the cord was never plugged in at a sharp angle and it still stopped working one day, only after months of the port kinda-sorta working after I messed with the charger for a few mins. Never ever have I had an android of any kinds charging port stop working on me like that, though it did make it 3 good years before it stopped. Also, no I think it's awful when phones dont have a headphone jack.

Regarding the lightning port durability on the plug/unplug test, I've been daily driving an iPhone 5 since near its release date with a charge as much as 2x a day with a minimum of at least once, calculating up over 1500 plug ins, granted the average time people seem to keep their iPhone before getting the next one, I see this as a non issue in terms of it now also being the place to plug in a headphone adapter. And yes i have replaced the battery, going on the 3rd one soon.

Excellent stress test video. I'm with you on the lighting port. Not crazy about the headphone jack. Apple is slowly trying to steer it's users wireless so that they can eventually eliminate the jack entirely in future editions. What better way than by implementing an annoying lighting port. Looking forward to your lighting port results. I wonder about the sound quality/capabilities, and limitations.

AdmiralAckbarTR

Had my iPhone 5 for 4 years and the lightning port still works fine on it to this day. iFixit teardown shows that Apple reinforced the lightning port in anticipation of people being forced to use it more. I don't agree with the decision to remove the headphone jack, but I don't think lightning port durability is something most people will have to worry about, unless they plan on using their phone for more than 4 years.

3:40 - No, it's not *doubling* the rate of wear and tear, unless you plug in headphones exactly as often as you plug in other accessories or chargers. This will vary a lot depending on the user. It could be more than double... or it could be almost no change at all if you hardly ever use headphones.

Jack Carver I wouldn't call it a trick or planned obsolescence, it's phasing out a very old technology which I don't agree needs fazed out but oh well, I certainly think Apple wouldn't go this far as if people buy the phone and in a much shorter time the port stops working, well then people will stop buying iPhones, simple as

I suddenly got recommendations of this video on KZonlines so I thought to watch it. And I don’t think you need to bend it so badly that the phone gives away its own life. Neither I think that anyone could use a phone so badly. But it’s just a test where you could imagine how roughly and toughly you have to bend a phone to take away its life. Rest is history And I guess iPhone 7 is just very much durable. I’ve seen a lot of people using an iPhone 7 which still works like a beast in its performance and durability. And yes MATT BLACK IS STILL MY FAVORITE 🤩 COLOUR. ANYONE LOOKING TO BUY A USED 7 then go for Matt black.

The lack of a built-in headphone jack is a deal breaker to me. I have excellent V-Moda M-100 headphones I like to use to extended periods of time. I also use a very high end external amp which attaches to the headphone jack. With the extended use I absolutely require the ability to plug in my headphones AND charge my phone simultaneously. Last year I fully intended to switch to the Galaxy Note 5 when they came out. I was intending to buy the largest memory version of the phone and add a 128GB micro-sd card to it So I could have a lot of memory. When Samsung eliminated the Micro-sd card slot it was a complete deal breaker for me. I contacted Samsung and "wink-wink" was assured the next version in 2016 would bring back the micro-SD port, so I decided to wait one more year. Then when my old iPhone died and I was forced to buy a new phone. I had been dead set on waiting for the Samsung, but was forced to choose from either the old Galaxy Note 5 without the memory card slot or the iPhone 6S plus. I opted for the 128GB version of the iPhone 6S Plus, thus missing my chance to switch to the Android phone. I actually really liked the 6S+, it had an excellent build quality compared to the current Samsung. I then considered waiting a couple years before upgrading again, and probably go for the iPhone 8 or 7S Plus, whatever it will be called. This headphone jack stupidity is even dumber than Samsung removing the memory card slot. If Apple does not bring back the headphone jack I most certainly will not continue as an Apple customer. I hope Apple does as Samsung did and quickly corrects what I believe to be a huge mistake. BTW, my reason for wanting to switch to Samsung was Apples introduction of the lightning connector. I was getting sick and tired of Apple raping its customers excessively for a few bucks. I wrote an article online showing how Apple had earlier intentionally broken all their early charging devices by suddenly requiring a signal on the data pins of their new phones like the iPhone 4. The old iPhone 3 and iPod chargers would no longer work. Even some docking stations were made obsolete by this change. As an electronics engineer I knew there was absolutely no good reason to require signals on the data input and output pins. I easily determined that by adding two 100k resistors (cost about 5 cents each) you could easily modify your old chargers, both car and wall chargers to work with the new iPhone 4 and later models. Without these resistors the new phones would say they were "unable to charge with this accessory" I proved it was a total sham. I modified all sorts of car and home adapters and they ALL worked with my fix. You can read my conversion instructions here: smile.amazon.com/review/RW2QKXBPSYQA5/ref=cm_cr_dp_title?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B001JP8T9Y&channel=detail-glance&nodeID=2335752011&store=wireless I even created adapters with USB male and female connectors which used the 100k resistors to tap off the +5v USB power pins to place a small voltage on the data pins. By using the high resistance resistors it had no effect on the data moving through those cables for syncing and backing up. Apple's greed simply wanted you to buy all new chargers for your new devices. I see the lightning plug as an evolution of this concept, and now again with the missing headphone jack. BTW, one of the easiest openings in the iPhone to waterproof is the 3.5mm headphone jack,so I do not buy that excuse. One good thing about Samsung is they stick to using industry standard components. Apple is always trying to corner their customers into buying their proprietary technology at a premium cost.

been using an iphone 5s since before the 6, i connect my power cord dozens of times a day, was a delivery driver so every time i got in my car i plugged it in and out.... likely more than most people. still works fine to this day. it replaced a note 2, i went through micro usb cables like they were disposable because the connectors would go to crap so quickly from my use. note 5 came out and still didn't have usb c so i got a note 4 but after a few months some problems with it made me go ack to my 5s which i had held on to. apple might do a lot of annoying things, but lightning was so much better than micro usb. note 7 is my next phone tho once the non exploding ones come out.

Using 1 port for 2 peripherals does not double it's wear rate (at least, not necessarily). It doubles it usability. If someone charges their phone everyday, but only uses headphones once a week, it does not see double the use.

Genuine question. I get the inconvenience of not having a headphone jack, but would we ever reach the durability limit in normal use? I have an iPhone 4 with the old, non-reversible, 30 pin connector, used for 3 years. The connector still works even with so many plugs and unplugs, and many of those with me accidentally trying to shove the plug in the wrong way around. I don't think an average use would cause a fatal wear and tear of the port.

I had an iPhone 4s for 2-3 years. It was never out of the cover and was only out of the cover to clean it. Now my father has it and the only damage was scratches around the charging port and the head phone jack where i went to plug the charger and headphones into them. The phone is still completely and entirely original. Just proves that if you look after something it'll go a long way. And as for those $160 apple wireless headphones. Dont bother. Just pick up a blue tooth head set.

@Siri That's why Google Assistant is better than you. It can give "more answers" ;)

He said he keeps his razor blades in a separate purse; I'm weak 😂😂. This dude is funny and the sound of the phone scratching was very satisfying. +1 subscriber.

I got the very first iPhone at launch 9 years ago back when I was 15, and had every single one up until the 6S. I still have them all in their boxes, saving them because I was a massive fan boy. Then I won a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge earlier this year and decided to try that out for a while. I never thought I'd say it, but I don't think I'll ever go back to Apple now. It's just a far superior package overall...

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge is the best smartphone right now on the planet. Once you go Samsung flagships you'll never go back to iPhone ever.

Interesting and informative video. Thank you for this. It did make me cringe seeing you scratch up a brand new phone though!

It's painful to watch how you test the durability of phones. But, this is the fruit of knowledge, and sacrifices have to be made for information. So I appreciate you doing this for us in behalf.

It doesn't double the use on the lightning port, charging, transfers and headphones all have different patterns of usage. It does increase the wear and tear.
